About León Nicaragua, in central America Leon is the old colonial capital of the country rebuilt by the Spaniards after a devastating volcanic eruption in 1610 (the ruins of Leon Viejo can still be seen 30 km South of the present site). Traditionally, it was known as a religious, cultural and agricultural town. Over the centuries, the city and the surrounding area suffered from earthquakes and numerous volcanic eruptions. It still bears the scars of the last civil wars which took place in the 1970s and 80s. Leon’s 441,308 inhabitants are spread over thirteen municipalities: Leon, the regional capital, Nagarote, La Paz Center, Quezalguaque, Telica, Larreynaga, the Jicaral, Santa Rosa of the Rock, Sauce and Achuapa. The Leon region boasts spectacular landscapes, beautiful beaches, magnificent volcanoes and numerous areas waiting to be explored. In addition to the beautiful beaches of Poneloya and Las Peñitas, the historical towns, the architecturally beautiful churches and its famous cathedral, the region is also home to four magnificent volcanoes that make up the Maribios mountain range. Unless you prefer renting a car upon arrival, your transfer from Las Mercedes Airport in Managua (80 km south of Leon) can be arranged on request. CLIC HERE TO SEE PHOTOS OF LEON.
